Pilates
Currently I teach Pilates part-time at a Club Pilates location here in Orlando. I have been asked what Pilates really is and how it differs from other workouts. I can say that Pilates for sure is about your internal awareness. If you are not really focusing on core connection or even just internal connection when you are practicing you won't feel the workout like you should. Joseph Pilates called this contrology in the beginning on purpose he wanted you to be in control of your mind, your breath, and your body. Similar to yoga, which I'll talk about that in another post, but similar in the sense you have to focus on your breath and your connection inside to feel and see the results you want.
I do feel that Pilates is great for getting that core connection we all need. I would say as a Mom who is trying to always improve her core Pilates is amazing but in general as a trainer I do feel that all people need Pilates to deepen there core connection. When our cores are strong everything else not only gets stronger but you also move with such ease. Core connection/ strong core is not just a six pack but the deep layer of the abdominals that wrap around the spine to help us move with grace and ease.
Pilates has a ton of equipment that some studios have, but it can also be done without equipment. I get asked a lot at the studio I work at what are some things they can do at home or when on vacation. I have a list of my go to's that I feel everyone should add into there everyday practice and life. This is something you could do while watching TV, while on vacation in a hotel or on a beach, this can also be done at a gym mixed in with your normal weight lifting or cardio routines. I have a list of my go to's which some are simple and based on your connection with your mind and muscles.
One of the first mat Pilates go to exercises I tell everyone they can work into their home routines or even when they travel routine is the Pilates series of 5. It's 5 different exercises down back to back with no break in between them. The exercises include single leg stretch, single straight leg stretch, double leg stretch, straight leg double leg stretch, and criss cross aka bicycle. These exercises can be done with head lifted or lowered. Do make sure your back is connected the whole time to the floor. No space in lower back you are in an open kinetic chain so we need grounding of the back. They are just some of the basic mat exercises that can be done anywhere and are amazing for core activation.
I truly believe that we need a healthy core and in order to do so we must work the inside as well as the outside. These small tips/ exercises you can do anywhere and truly improve your core, remember to focus on your breathing and stay present while doing the exercises.
